Tidbits on Bytes: Battle Suit Aces

I came for the card combat but I was floored by the storytelling

Battle Suit Aces first popped up on my radar when I saw it in the announcement of Outersloth, an indie game fund backed by Innersloth studio, back at the 2024 Summer Game Awards. Even from that brief snippet of gameplay footage, I was intrigued by the card battler RPGs art style and premise; I have always had a bit of a soft spot for Robotech and using card based system for combat is one of my favorite mechanics in gaming. As more about the game came out including the bevy of recruitable characters and some slices of the games writing I was genuinely excited. This game has a great card combat system with enough nuance and customization for veteran players while being simple enough to be approachable to those who are not as familiar with the mechanic. The writing of the game was genuinely great and a total love letter to 80’s and 90’s mecha animes. Most of the time in this genre, the mechanical progression is the pleasurable stimuli that drives forward my progression but in Battle Suit Aces I couldn’t wait to get the next story beat. Anyone playing this game will see themselves in this vibrant and interesting cast of characters.
